    Voronet

The monastery of Voronet is the most famous and stunning among the painted Moldavian Monasteries. It was founded in 1487 by the Stephen the Great to celebrate an important victory against the Turkish armies. The monastery is particularly noted for its superb frescoes – and Voronet is often dubbed the “Oriental Sistine Chapel”. The magnificent ‘Last Judgement’ fresco, which covers the whole of the western wall, is probably the finest single composition among the painted monasteries. The narthex contains the tomb of Daniel the Hermit, who was the first abbot of Voroneţ Monastery. The Austrians forced the monks to leave in the late 18th century, but the monastery is now inhabited by a small number of nuns.
